2022 Truffle Row Carignan Syrah Cinsault
The name Truffle Row comes from the row of hazelnut trees planted alongside this vineyard, whose roots are infused with the spores of the famous and rare black truffle. We haven’t found any truffles yet, but it doesn’t stop us enjoying this wine. The wine is a blend of harmonious red varieties that are typically grown and vinified together in other similar climatic regions throughout the Old and New Worlds.

"Gorgeously fruited and complex, the wine shows dark fruit intensity, toasted spice, rich floral and cedar characters on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and plump mouthfeel, wonderfully supported by velvety texture and grainy tannins. Firmly structured, yet velvety and soothing. At its best: now to 2037. 94 Points" - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
"Delicious and cracking value were the two things that sprang immediately to mind with this delightful red. A blend of 45% Carignan, 34% Syrah and 21% Cinsault, with 60% whole bunches utilised. 11 months maturation in old French barriques. The name comes from a row of hazelnut bushes at the winery whose roots have been infused with the spores of the legendary black truffle. So far, the team have not found any actual truffles but everyone deserves a dream. And when they do, they have a wine to enjoy with them. A deep vibrant purple, the wine offers aromas of plums, blackfruits, cloves and chocolate. This is a big, ripe, flavoursome, exuberant, fruit bomb style. Granted that is a style which can divide the crowd, but for all of us who love them, this is a cracker. Beautifully supple, with silky tannins, the texture has some density and there is decent length here. Utterly delicious, enjoy it over the next five to six years. 93 Points" - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
"Not your usual Barossa blend with these southern French varieties, with 45% Carignan, 34% Syrah (Shiraz) and 21% Cinsault. Named after the row of hazelnut bushes at the Hewitson winery that have had their roots infused with spores of black truffle. Apparently, Hewitson are yet to recoup on their investment! Anyways, the wine is shiny and darkly herbed, almost suave. Cola nut, licorice, Fruits of the Forest, vanilla and meaty roasting pan juices. Smooth with almost “bbq chip” savoury meatiness, overlaid with green peppercorn and licorice. Fine tannins for a pleasant grippy rumble with a steeliness through the tail. A match for beef (or mushroom) Wellington.. 93 Points" - Regan Drew, Wine Pilot
"A blend of 45% carignan, 34% syrah and 21% cinsault with 60% whole bunches in the mix, matured in old French barriques for 12 months. Bright and perfumed and packed with ripe fruit and gingery spice. Blueberry, satsuma plum and boysenberry with hints of jasmine, salted licorice, gingerbread, sarsaparilla, earth and mountain and amaro herbs. Exuberant and slinky, it comes across as quite fragrant in the mouth as well, with something akin to Turkish delight whipping around on the fringes of the palate. Fine and powdery in tannin with bright, sapid acidity, and it sports a supple tide of plush fruit and spice on the finish. 93 Points" - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
"Dean Hewitson has been mucking about with Carignan and Cinsault for a few years now but in 2022 decided to co-ferment them with Shiraz, and importantly incorporating 60% whole bunch, whole berries and stalks. So, there’s a bit of Pinot making in it. It has a spicy berry aroma with a plush medium body and rather elegant palate. Fine sinewy tannins cut through the fleshy fruit providing balance and structure. The oak is beautifully handled to snuggly sit within. 93 Points" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot
"Who needs a trip to the South of France when you can have your very own Southern Rhône blend of Barossa Valley Carignan, Syrah and Cinsault from Dean Hewitson in your glass? The 2022 Truffle Row is a gorgeously fragrant, medium-bodied red named after the hazelnut trees planted at the winery – the roots traditional homes for truffle-growing – and with juicy aromas of black cherry and juniper, blackberry, clove and chocolate block. It’s chewy and generous and velvety smooth on the palate, and it’s even better the second day after opening, if you don’t snuffle it all up like a truffle pig in one sitting that is. 92 Points" - Melissa Moore, Wine Pilot
"Ink black core to a deep purple rim. Lifted aromatics of blackberry, violets, and crushed mountain herbs. Dark fruits fill the core with a dark smoked meat savoury undertone. Good length and supple tannins make for very approachable yet serious drinking. 92 Points" - Stuart Knox, The Real Review
