Reviews

"A single vineyard wine, the Shiraz here has all been cultivated from a single Shiraz vine, located in the Old Garden Vineyard, which was originally from 1853. In other words, for those to whom these things matter, this is the resurrection of a pre-phylloxera clone of the grape. 45% of the wine was whole bunches and the wine spent three weeks on skins. My pick of the latest Hewitson releases, this is an absolute superstar Barossa Shiraz.Purple/maroon, the nose just takes hold. Utterly gorgeous. Wines like this are a problem when one is tasting. You need to keep moving at a reasonable clip, but then along comes this in a glass and you find yourself spending minutes just smelling the wine, which has taken you to dreamland. One almost forgets to taste the thing, such is the majesty of the aromas. Coffee bean notes, mocha, blueberries, ripe plums, vanilla and cassis. This is dense but dancing. Finely balanced with an intriguing mix of finesse and power. If Barossa Shiraz can be ethereal, then this is it. The silkiest of tannins and such a lingering finish. Shows how good the 2021s can be. Just wow. This will do me. Ten to fifteen years. 98 Points." - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

"Shiraz sourced exclusively from one 1853 shiraz vine in the middle of The Old Garden plot. Purple-splashed garnet in the glass with pristine fruit aromas of plum, blueberry and black cherry fruits, detailed and perfectly poised. Hints of baking spices, sage, bay leaf, olive tapenade, roasting venison, purple floral tones, mocha and earth. There's a chimera of wintergreen way back in the aroma scape. Graceful, comfortingly oaked with excellent concentration and red-fruited intensity. Savoury and so elegant in its travel, tannins powdery and sedimentary, sour cherry acidity and a finish that sails on. Beautiful. 97 Points." - Dave Brookes, Wine Companion

"Interesting origins for this super wine. It’s a single vineyard wine that can be traced back to 1853. A single vine from that planting was nurtured over many years of harvesting buds and grafting to rootstock to create this wonderful single site. Has intensity but it sits more in the medium bodied zone. Alluring aromas of red currant and light plum with a little vanilla essence. Gently caresses the palate as it floats effortlessly to a sustained finish. Smooth integration of tannin and new and seasoned oak. Intriguing brick dust and chalk characters on the palate. Just beautiful. 96 Points." - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

"Immensely complex and engaging, the bouquet shows blackberry, smoked game, toasted spice and hazelnut aromas, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate that's succulent and supple. It's mouthfilling and plush with a sustained velvety finish. At its best: 2025 to 2039." - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"Dubbed the “Mother Vine” Shiraz as the vineyard was planted from the cuttings from one single Shiraz vine found growing among the 1853 Old Garden Mourvèdre vineyard. Winemaking sees 45% whole bunches in the fermentation and held on skins for 3 weeks. 18 months maturation in new and used French oak barriques. Powerful expression of Barossa Shiraz with a nose full of plum and dark raspberry flesh, choc licorice bullets, spices of clove and pepper sprinkled over warm coffee, gun flint, vanilla, pretzel and umami driven roasting meat pan. Fleshy and sapid with a dark flow and swagger yet held tight with strong intent. Chock full of plum and dark berries with piquant spice, char and that umami savoury intrigue. Tannins are toothsome through the long tail and finally cut through by blood orange acidity. Be in no rush to open this release. 96 Points." - Regan Drew, Wine Pilot

"Estate grown, the vines from this single vineyard are ‘Sélection Clonale’, grafted from one lone 1853 Shiraz vine found growing in the middle of The Old Garden Vineyard. The 2021 Monopole Shiraz is showing supple black fruits, blueberries and cream with spice and pepper, and leather and cocoa, layers of aromas matched with a full-bodied power-pack of intensity and Dean Hewitson's hallmark supple palate that's smooth and textural. It’s ripe but savoury, with medium elegant alcohol, chalky, dusty tannins and a cocoa dust finish. Drink or hold for a decade. 96 Points." - Melissa Moore, Wine Pilot

"There’s history here, a lot of history to work through as you taste. Buds from a shiraz vine planted in 1853 were harvested and grafted on to 30- year-old rootstock in the Monopole Vineyard at Dorrien in the Barossa Valley. The maker believes it has “resurrected” an ancient pre-phylloxera clone of shiraz. What we taste is definitely rich, concentrated and essentially Barossa in tone and flavour, and very much in the bold Aussie shiraz character. Fragrant in black fruits, cassis, black liquorice, balsamic and deep woodsy spices. An unctuous and richly layered palate awaits, warm and textural, and brimming in fleshy, ripe sweet fruit and soft easy tannins that become firm and dry to close. Some savoury, smoked goods and pan forte notes add yet another few layers of sensory interest. A big impact red wine and one to be enjoyed with food, not solo. 95 Points." - Jeni Port, Wine Pilot

"Dark plum, liqueur cherry chocolate. Some sweet pipe tobacco and rubbed rosemary. Beautifully silky, a gliding grace across the palate, ultra high-def tannins the texture of crushed rock. Barossa shiraz for the Rhone freaks out there, but a wine that never loses its Australian accent. 95 Points." - Nick Ryan, The Australian

"A rich wine of pliant density and impressive freshness. Clove, blue and darker fruit allusions, smoked meats and peppercorn, dousing the pushy finish. Wonderful, palate-staining extract. My gripe is the obtuse oak, lurking in the background from attack to drying finish. Time should do this wine favors, offering integration. Judged with optimism in mind. Best after 2026." - Ned Goodwin MW, JamesSuckling
